I can’t say it enough. We. Love. Field trips. We love summer field trips, winter field trips, spring field trips and fall field trips. Field trips let children learn and discover through immersion and exploration. A field trip can be a simple or as complicated as you make it. There are so many opportunities around for learning and growth.
The autumn season is a wonderful time to get out there and explore our world with your kids. The weather is mild. The foliage is spectacular. The holiday season is on the horizon. 1. Go on a nature scavenger hunt
Take a trip to the park and have a nature scavenger hunt. During the fall there are many different types of leaves, acorns, nuts and other items on the ground for little detectives to find. For even more fun take along your Nature Study Exploration Kit and perform your own nature-inspired science experiments.
2. Pick your own apples or other fruit
Fall is harvest time! Take a trip to a local farm or orchard and pick your own apples. Sit under an apple tree and read 3 in 1: A Picture of God. This is a wonderful book that explains the Holy Trinity through an exploration of the apple. Afterwards, go home and make fresh applesauce or apple pie.
3. Visit a pumpkin patch
Fall and pumpkins go together like peanut butter and jelly. Visit a pumpkin patch and pick out your own pumpkins. Learn about the life cycle of the pumpkin and perhaps learn to make roasted pumpkin seeds.
4. Attend a fall festival
Fall is festival time for many communities. From scarecrow strolls to trunk-or-treats there is usually always something going on nearby to attend.
5. See the fall foliage
The fall is a beautiful time of year, especially if you live in the northeast US or a similar area. The trees turn bright yellows, reds, and oranges. The air is crisp and clean. Take your kids on a drive in the country to watch the leaves turn colors. Talk about how the leaves get their color and what happens to trees in the fall.
6. Visit a Corn Maze
Corn mazes can be great activities for login/critical thinking skills and team building. They are also a lot of fun. Take a trip to a corn maze. Go through once and then challenge your children to see if they can beat their time on a second trip through. Just make sure that you use the bathroom before you go in.
7. Take a trip to the zoo
There are many benefits to going on a trip to the zoo in the fall. With the start of cooler weather, many animals are beginning to be more active. Also, fall is a great time to talk about how different animals prepare for winter weather it is getting ready to hibernate or growing their winter coats.
8. Volunteer at a food bank
Any time a year is a good time to teach about giving back. However, with fall being the season of Halloween candy and Thanksgiving feasts this is the perfect time to talk about helping people who may be hungry. Take your kids to volunteer at the Salvation Army or local food bank. Bake cookies or pies and take them to the local shelter.
9. Take a bakery tour
Nothing says fall like freshly baked bread. Not just bread but cakes, cookies, and pies. The autumn season is a great time to tour a local bakery and learn how some of these delicious holiday favorites are made.
10. Visit a haunted house
If you have older kids (or ones not easily scared) a haunted house actually makes a great field trip. You can research story building, theatrical makeup, historical monsters and many other topics related to the operation of a haunted house. In fact, entire unit studies could be built around the operation and a culminating visit to a haunted house.
